The New Routines are an alternative four-piece from Aberdeen, Scotland, formed in 2018. Built around a reputation for energetic live shows, the band quickly gained traction on the north-east circuit, securing support slots across the region and touring Scotland with the PRS-funded initiative Hit The Road within their first year.
In 2020, the band recorded Garden State, a track that has since become a staple of their live set. As live music returned, they marked their comeback by headlining a sold-out 300-capacity show at The Tunnels in Aberdeen in August 2021.
Their debut album Staying in Place followed in 2022 — a record balancing soaring indie-rock choruses with more stripped-back acoustic moments. The release was supported by sold-out shows in Aberdeen and Edinburgh, including Sneaky Pete's, and led to their largest headline run to date across Scotland's major cities in early 2023.
In 2024, the band released their first commercial-grade single, If You Stay. Produced by Paul MacInally at 45-A-Side Studios in Glasgow — whose credits include Florence and the Machine, Kid Ink and Nina Nesbitt — the track became their most successful release to date and received airplay on BBC Scotland.
In 2025, the band expanded into London, playing multiple shows across the city and closing the run with a live-recorded set in support of War Child. The year also saw the release of their most-streamed single yet, Would Everything Be Better If, accompanied by a professional release campaign and music video.
In 2026, the band continue to build momentum. Following another London show at the start of the year, they are returning to 45-A-Side Studios to record their next commercial single while simultaneously working on a new EP and expanding their live schedule.
In 2026, The New Routines signed with Foundary Records — an independent label built on a commitment to artist development and creative integrity. The partnership marks an exciting new chapter for the band, with a programme of upcoming live dates and new releases planned across the year. Stay tuned for announcements.

Would Everything Be Better If
A stellar example of their talent and abilities as a band. The song's extended intro includes a catchy guitar hook and loud drums. The track switches up half way through, adopting a faster pace — a captivating twist that comes as no surprise it became known as "the song with the beatswitch". Reminiscent of Wallows, Circa Waves and Cassia, with its memorable electric guitar and melodic vocals. Having sold out iconic Scottish venues such as Edinburgh's Sneaky Pete's, The New Routines are well on their way to being the next big indie band.
